One teacher, one child, forty-five unhurried minutes.

Brightpath Tutoring is a small home studio in Hamilton for primary and early secondary students who need calm, patient help with reading, writing and maths — with a qualified teacher who knows your child by name.

No group classes, no rotating tutors. Come to the studio table, or meet the same teacher live over video — whichever suits your week.

“I kept meeting bright kids who had quietly decided they were bad at school.”
— Mereana Clarke, founder and teacher

Why the studio started

After fourteen years in a Hamilton classroom, Mereana noticed the same thing every term: children who were keeping up, but only just — and who had started to believe the problem was them. There was never enough time in a class of thirty to sit down beside one child and stay there until it clicked.

So in 2019 she cleared the back room of her home on Grey Street, put two chairs at a big wooden table, and started seeing one child at a time. Word travelled the way it does in Hamilton — through other parents at the school gate.

Today Brightpath is still just that room and that table — plus a screen for the families who can't get across town. Sessions are 45 minutes, one-to-one, and each one is planned the week before from what your child actually struggled with. You get a short note home afterwards, so nothing is a mystery between visits.

Live video lessons

Can't get across town after school, or living outside Hamilton? Your child can still have the same teacher, one-to-one, live on screen. The lesson runs exactly like a studio session — same plan, same pace, same notes home — just with a camera between you.

  • A real lesson, not a video call45 minutes of teaching with a shared whiteboard, so your child can show their working and see it corrected as they go.
  • One click to joinNo apps to install. We send a private link by text before each lesson, and a parent is welcome to sit in for the first one.
  • The same weekly noteEverything we covered, what went well and what to practise, written up and sent home just like a studio session.

The Kenyan curriculum, taught properly.

We follow the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the new Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework, strand by strand. Every session is planned against the learner's grade and the exact sub-strand they are working on at school — so nothing we do here is extra work, and nothing is missed.

Pre-Primary · PP1 – PP2

Language, numbers and play

Listening and speaking, pre-reading, letter sounds, counting to 20, shapes and patterns — built through songs, stories and hands-on play rather than worksheets.

Lower Primary · Grade 1 – 3

Literacy and numeracy

Kiswahili and English reading fluency, handwriting, composition, addition and subtraction with carrying, multiplication tables and money problems.

Upper Primary · Grade 4 – 6

Subjects and projects

English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social Studies and CRE — plus help with the CBC project work and the practical tasks learners are assessed on.

Junior School · Grade 7 – 9

Integrated and pre-technical

Integrated Science, Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture, Business Studies and Mathematics — with the note-taking, revision and exam technique junior school now demands.

Senior School · Grade 10 – 12

Pathway subjects

Support along the STEM, Social Sciences and Arts & Sports pathways: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography and Business Studies.

Every session

Competencies, not just marks

We build the core competencies the framework asks for — communication, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and digital literacy — and record progress against the strands, so you can see growth, not just a score.

Bring your child's scheme of work or the term's assessment report to the first session and we will map the plan to it. Kiswahili-medium and English-medium learners are both welcome.

The Brightpath library

A wall of books, and every one of them borrowable. Learners choose something to take home each week, and we keep a simple card so we know what is out and what is waiting. Reading for pleasure is the quietest way to lift a reading level.

  • Levelled readersShort chapter books and story books sorted by reading level, so a child can find one that fits without guessing.
  • CBC set texts and revisionCopies of the set books, revision guides and past assessment papers for Grade 3, 6, 9 and the senior school pathways.
  • Kiswahili and English shelvesStories in both languages, including Kenyan authors, so reading in Kiswahili feels as normal as reading in English.

Every learner leaves with a book — and brings it back the next week.

Borrowing

Free for learners in sessions. One book at a time, two weeks, no fines — if it is late we just ask for it back.

Reading club

Saturday mornings, 10.00am to 11.00am. A small group reads the same story and talks about it over a cup of tea.

Book donations

Finished with a book your child loved? Pass it on. We find it a home on the shelf and a name inside the cover.

Eight labs, open all hours.

Step into a virtual lab for each subject and run the experiment yourself. Move the sliders, mix the chemicals, plot the graph — everything works right here on the page, and every result is explained the way we would explain it at the table.

Geography lab — reading a contour map

Drag the sea-level slider and watch how much of the island is left above water. Contour lines join points of equal height, so the closer they sit, the steeper the ground.

Sea level 120 m. About 78% of the island is still above water. The steep eastern ridge stays dry longest.

Why families choose us

Most of our families come by word of mouth from another Hamilton parent. Here's what they tend to mention.

A patient pace

Nothing moves on until your child is ready. Some weeks that means one idea, done properly.

Weekly notes home

A short written note after every session: what we worked on, what went well, what to practise.

A qualified teacher

Mereana is a registered NZ primary teacher with fourteen years in classrooms — not a student tutor.

Times that fit family life

After-school slots from 3.15pm and Saturday mornings. We'll find a regular time that sticks.

In a real home

No office, no waiting room. Children settle faster in a warm room with a bookshelf and a biscuit tin.

We talk to the school

With your permission, we check in with your child's teacher so the work lines up with the classroom.

“Small steps, taken often, get further than one big push.”

That's the whole idea behind Brightpath — and it's why we only ever take one child at a time.

Your Brightpath account

One login for the whole family. Create an account as a parent, a learner, a teacher or an administrator, and the right dashboard opens for you — lessons, notes home, library books, games and live video links in one place. Teachers and administrators get the staffroom: create a live lesson, paste the Google Meet link, and it appears for learners to join. Once you are logged in, the Log in button in the menu becomes your profile button, where you can manage your account.

Every account is tied to a role, so each person sees only what belongs to them. Parents see their children's progress and pay for sessions. Learners see their next lesson, their reading and their games. Teachers see their timetable and write the weekly notes. Administrators see enrolments, the library register and the whole studio at a glance.

  • Parent or guardianBook and reschedule sessions, read the weekly note home, follow CBC/CBE progress and keep the term's payments in one place.
  • LearnerBrowse the live lessons your teacher has published, pick the one you want and join it with one click — no apps to install.
  • TeacherYour staffroom: create a live lesson, paste the Google Meet link, and set out the Senior School materials. Learners see the lesson and join with one click.
  • AdministratorEnrolments, the library register, session records and the studio's term calendar — the whole picture in one screen.

Let's talk.

Ring or text the studio, or send a note through the form and we'll reply within a day. The first chat is free, takes about twenty minutes, and there's no obligation to book anything afterwards.

We'll ask what's going well at school, what isn't, and what you'd like to change. Then we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit — and if we're not, we'll point you somewhere better.
